You know, the past year and a half has been fucking crazy for me.
I moved to Los Angeles because of the lack of life everywhere around me. I got sick of being in a little town with little people who weren’t doing shit with themselves. So, I made a huge move with very little resources. Ever since then, I’ve been learning from everyone around me, working extremely hard to do something big. Back in early 2010, me and a good friend at the time were talking about what I wanted to do. He noted that I’d be very good at fashion, because he would notice the time and effort I’d put into how I looked.
I got into merchandising, didn’t like it as much as I thought, so my friend suggested I do fashion design. At that point, I was already making a lot of little things like shorts, accessories, etc.. And that’s what I’d do just about every day. I created a website with a lot of these little things right before I moved to LA, not taking it very seriously. The next year, I enrolled in school, learned a decent amount, and met a lot of really awesome people who taught me a lot of really great skills.
Late last year, my boyfriend, Brian, was around me when I got a sale on my rinky-dink website, Illogic, for a pair of shorts. “Wow”, he said, “You sold a pair of shorts?” I said, “Yup!” He looked at me, shocked. “No advertising?” “Nope!” I replied. He, then, told me the opportunity I had to really make some cool things. Ever since that conversation, I’ve been up day and night, designing an entire brand for people to see, and hopefully love.
In high school, I was the awkward, anti-social computer geek/nerd into asian culture that people loved to make fun of, but I totally embraced it. I had an astounding group of friends who were very similar, and we’d just feed off of each other. I’m still that girl, and I want to bring that out in my brand. I want to represent those who don’t want to look like your average hot chick. I want to represent those who are different, who are artistic, intelligent, dorky, cute, and edgy as fuck.
That’s what I want, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. The next few months will be crucial for my life. I can’t go into much detail, but I’m making a huge transition, and doing a LOT of crazy things in between. It’s a bumpy road ahead, and I’ve already had a lot of curve balls and road blocks, but there’s not a fucking thing that will ever stop me.
All of those taking their time to read this, wherever you may be, I want to let you know that you can’t let anything stop you. If you have a vision, a dream, you better bust your ass and don’t look at those around you. Push yourself. Don’t make excuses — just do. Keep your head up, keep moving forward, and keep breathing; no matter what.
If you keep doing these things diligently, I assure you, your time will come.
